I started this project during covid times, exploring my love for playing and
learning many instruments as well as my fascination with arranging.

Some people don't love the fantasy genre when it comes to compositions, however, I love them. I realized after playing the games for a while, that what I really wanted was to sit in the environments just to listen to the music. These soundtracks were my gateway OST's into deeper enjoyment of video game music, and I am super happy to get to cover a song from them finally. This wasn't my first idea, but it was a fun one. I will be arranging some of the more ethereal pieces one day soon 🙂 I honestly chose this piece because I thought it would be a simple one to cover due to the similarity in instrumentation. I was surprisingly wrong in my assumption! I ended up re-arranging and re recording all the guitar and cello parts right in the studio and ended up having to learn the new arrangement for the video after recording. I also had 0 plans of putting percussion in the song, but ended up loving it when I decided to mess with it. It just goes to show how important adaptability is in the creative process. The first song I ever tried to learn by ear from a video game was actually Frog's Theme when I was 13 years old. Volume 2 has been a staple in my musical life ever since the day I heard it. I have used it for my own personal meditation practices, it has been background to classes I have taught from time to time. The pieces on that album are masterfully done. I arranged this when my Mandolin was getting some work done and I thought I wouldn't be able to get a cover done in time before it was fixed. I am happy I waited to record this one as my cello playing needed to marinate for a while longer, and the etherial timing that the song lives in took a minuet to set in. I had to learn how I could count it that would make sense to me. I feel like coming back to this one again as my cello playing improves and I am able to get more control of how I want the instrument to sing would be a really fun test of progress. I had this one in the back of my mind just brewing. Another song from one of my favorite games of all time from one of my favorite temple puzzles of all time. One of the reasons I love Zelda games so much is solving puzzles and this temple is so much fun to play. Fitting that the music underneath it is so intriguing. This time around there wasn't really any struggle in creating the arrangement. The piece really came together seamlessly and I hope it comes across that way. The other fun part was figuring out how to use the right magic to put a part of myself in the mirrors to have some percussion...ANYWAY! Between the art style and the music of this game, there is so much fantastic atmosphere. I have wanted to do, just about, every song on this OST. The melody of this opening theme really makes the other moments when it shows up more and more impactful, all the way to the final moments of the game. I hope to do another analysis video of this melodies story impact. Let me know if you would enjoy that 🙂 I didn’t struggle too much musically with this one, it was really just beautiful to arrange and play. The hardest part was being consistent and patient as I was recording the parts. I kept feeling myself want to increase tempo when the intensity of the piece increased, so for those of you that struggle with tempo and pacing, here is a perfect one for you to practice!! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did putting it together. I had been wanting to do something from these games. I just recently played through the first two in preparation to play Super so listened to a bit of the soundtrack from it and immediately got hooked on this song. It feels like it encapsulates everything about Metroid. The adventure, the darkness, the unknown, repetitiveness that you could get lost in and of course my favorite...patience. Not to mention it plays like a grunge song and that made my day. I wanted to do even more but was time constrained so there will most likely be others from Metroid 😉 The arrangement itself was a pure joy to put together. Everything had a clear place to sit in the arrangement and the parts fit the instruments really easily. There were still some struggles for each instrument for me. The consistency of a slower tempo always adds a bit of challenge to the mix. The accented notes and the shifting is tough for me and I kept feeling myself run out of bow during the melody so that took some calibrating and still could use more focused attention. I thought it had a sped up "Scarborough Fair" type of feel to it (which is a song I loved playing from Simon and Garfunkel) so I was happy to choose it when one of my Patreon's requested it. This is potentially the toughest song I have done so far on this channel on every instrument and instead of typing about it in the description here I hope to do a video next week explaining the challenges and how I overcame them to learn this arrangement. I am in no way saying that the ideas and concepts I am presenting in this video were intended by the composer. I just find it to be fascinating the amount of depth music can create if used well as a companion to a story.
